Character Name: Bolin
Canon: The Legend of Korra
Canon Point: Book 4, Episode 6; while he's asleep on the train
Background/History: i sorta like my hands
Personality:
It is expected that someone who was an orphan at the age of six and spent a good number of years living on the street would be serious, wise and hardworking. But that expectation has never met Bolin. Protected by his older brother Mako from the harsh realities of living on the street, Bolin can still be very immature. A good deal of his ideas and actions are childish, which include trying to raise money by having his pet fire ferret Pabu perform circus tricks or spending too much money on food. He means well, he really does, but he feels that ideas such as those are good ideas.
Bolin is a laid-back, naïve and fun-loving person. Highly optimistic, he looks on the bright side of things and hardly is ever in a bad mood. He cares about his friends and will do just about anything to cheer them up when they are feeling down. Honest with himself and others, Bolin can be very confident in himself. He has no problem with admitting Amon frightened him and that he still had problems sleeping at night. At the same time, his opinion of himself may be a little too high, as he does have a bit of an ego, which is not helped with the fact that he has screaming fangirls.
However, there is one way that is sure to deflate his ego, and that is to compare him to his brother Mako. Bolin constantly feels second best to his brother, it doesn't matter in what, in age, in fighting ability, in getting girlfriends, no matter what Bolin does, Mako is just so much better. When Mako shoots down Bolin's idea of Pabu doing circus tricks, saying that he'll figure something out like he always does, Bolin feels upset and is determined to prove to his brother that he is capable of making money with Pabu's routine. Which leads to him working with a triad as security when the Pabu Circus idea doesn't work, even though Mako warned him not to, because it would have meant he could make the money needed that his brother didn't believe he could. In spite of this inferiority that Bolin feels towards his brother and just how different the two are, Mako is Bolin's most important person. No matter what happens between the two, they will remain fiercely loyal to each other and will not let something get between them for long. Bolin would not even hesitate to sacrifice his life for Mako.
Another person that Bolin would no doubt lay down his life for would be for the next Avatar, Korra. The new comer to the probending world, Bolin had no problems with teaching her how the differences between traditional bending and probending. Korra is the object of Bolin's affections, simply for the fact that she is who she is. It doesn't bother him that Korra is far more athletic than him, it only makes her more attractive to him. After a whole debacle with inter-team relationships, even though he and Korra did not become an item, he is perfectly fine with remaining friends and is happy that she enjoyed herself on their date. He doesn't hold anything against her or his brother and things return to a sense of normalcy.
Three years don't really do a lot to change Bolin. He still holds on to his ideas of helping others and being optimistic, as he joins Kuvira's campaign to reunite the Earth Kingdom. At the same time, however, his feelings of inadequacy still remain, as Kuvira seems pretty adept at pushing them in order to keep Bolin at her side, even when Bolin's closest relationships display and are very upfront with their distrust of her. But even Kuvira's manipulations are enough to keep Bolin at her side, as when it finally becomes apparent Kuvira's true aims, he is quick to try and get away.
At his core, Bolin is someone who is friendly and outgoing who cares deeply about those important to him. While at times he may be immature, that does not mean that he is not capable of maturity. Self-confident to a fault, Bolin is someone that can be very open about his feelings. All in all, Bolin is a man who is still constantly growing, in more than one way.
Abilities/Powers:
Bolin is an earthbender, which gives him the power of geokinesis. As he was a probender, his style of earthbending varies greatly from that of traditional earthbending, which requires one to have a strong stance and remain rooted to the ground.
His style of earthbending allows him for greater maneuverability, letting him move faster to not only avoid attacks but dish them right back through flips and moves reminiscent of breakdancing and even when he's not touching the ground. The drawback to this is that Bolin cannot bend large amounts of earth with his "light on your feet" style. This does not mean that Bolin is incapable of traditional earthbending, as he uses it to bend large amounts of earth when needed.
Bolin is also capable of lavabending, which gives him additional abilities as an earthbender. He can melt down earth into lava form and do the reverse, turning lava into solid earth.
In addition, Bolin is very athletic as well, and is shown to have some knowledge of hand to hand combat styles, such as wrestling. His stamina is pretty top notch, as he capable of being able to bend with one arm after taking a mean hit to the other one.
Also, he's got some acting talent, as he has become well known for playing the role of Nuktuck.
Items/Weapons: Nothing but the clothes on his back, since he's on his way to a... um "re-education camp".
Sample Entry:
[ A rather lovely green eye pops up, looking at the camera. Then the video is turned upside down then back right side up before finally an entire face comes into view. He's still looking a bit confused, but he somehow manages to keep a smile on his face. ]
Right, sooo this honestly wasn't what I was expecting to see when I woke up? I mean, I know I'm a pretty sound sleeper, but I'm pretty sure I would've woken up whenever I was carried off the train.
[ He lets out an awkward laugh before growing a bit more serious. ] But seriously, what is this place? I don't think any of the camps that Kuvira made looked like this. I don't even think there's a place in the Earth Empire that looks like this... If that's the case, then... Kuvira did a really good job at changing the place.
A scary good job.
Sample Entry Two:
Bolin was no stranger to strange sleeping places. Spending a few years living on the streets and you sort of gain the ability to be able to sleep anywhere. It's a mixed blessing, really. You gain the ability to sleep anywhere, but then that means you can also sleep through just about anything as well. Probably... at least that's what Bolin's thinking when he first wakes up and sees where he is. He's pretty positive that he would have at least woken up the minute some of Kuvira's soldiers lifted up out of the train's prison cell.
But nope, he apparently slept right through that. So maybe he was a deeper sleeper than he thought. Or maybe he's still asleep. That's his next thought when he takes a look at his surroundings. Nothing looks like it should be in the Earth Empire. Bolin's spent the past three years traveling around the countryside, seeing just about everything that it has to offer in terms of terrain, and even the cities of Zaofu, Ba Sing Se and Omashu looked anything like this place. So this definitely can't be one of Kuvira's "re-education" camps. Kuvira may have power, but she can't have this much power.
Bolin takes a deep breath and takes another look at his surroundings. Dream or not, there's not much Bolin do about that until he finds out for sure what this is, and that means having a look around. With that, he begins to walk.

Setting:
It is important to note that the world of the Legend of Korra is built up directly from the world of Avatar: the Last Airbender. To start off with, there are two types of people in the world: benders and non-benders. Non-benders would be the equivalent of normal people, no special powers or anything of the sort. Benders, on the other hand, are those who were born with the ability to control one of the four elements-- fire, air, water, or earth-- with one exception.
In addition to that, each element has different subclasses that only certain benders will be able to accomplish, through either natural talent or hard work. Firebenders are capable of bending lightning; some waterbenders can control plants through bending the water in their stems, others have a natural gift for healing, while others are capable of bending the very blood in an organism's body, which is illegal; earthbenders can "see" through the earth, which would allow them to see the bits of earth left in metal, allowing them to metalbend.
However, there is one person who is capable of bending all four elements. That person is known as the Avatar. It is the responsibility of the Avatar to maintain "balance", whether it is between the differing nations or between the human and spirit world. When the Avatar dies, they are reincarnated into the next nation: fire then air then water then earth. It's the circle of life, alright?
For almost 10,000 years, there were four nations that lived in harmony. The Fire Nation, home of firebenders, is an industrial, and eventually, imperialistic nation. The Earth Kingdom is a more traditional kingdom. The Water Tribe, which live at the North and South Poles, have a simple way of life. The Air Nomads lived between four different temples and were more spiritual.
The Fire Nation started a war with the other nations, wiping out the Air Nomads, before being in a stalemate against the Earth Kingdom and the Water Tribes. This war continued for 100 years, until the defeat of Fire Lord Ozai by Avatar Aang, the last airbender. Through the combined effort of Aang and the new Fire Lord Zuko, the Fire Nation colonies established in the Earth Kingdom were repurposed into a new nation, one where people from all nations, can live together. This new country was named the United Republic of Nations and it's capitol became Republic City.
Much like in our world, war allowed for the world of Avatar to make massive technological jumps. In the sixty years following the war, the world managed to progress to the equivalent of 1920's America: electricity is commonplace, motor cars (called satomobiles) are in mass production, radio is the medium through which information is more widely spread, biplanes are used in combat, etc. However, there is still lingering resentment, which can be difficult to be rid of following one hundred years of war.
Due to the amount of changes that had occurred, people from the different nations are have greater chances to intermingle with one another. Families can be compromised of people with different bending capabilities, which lead to siblings who are capable of bending different elements, such as Mako and Bolin, who are a firebender and earthbender respectively. In addition, there is a popular sport called probending, in which teams made up of an earthbender, firebender and waterbender compete against one another.
With the positive changes, there are bound to be negative ones as well. Rather than there being discontent amongst nations, it is now between classes: rich and poor, benders and nonbenders. It is in this environment that figures such as Amon can take power. Amon's aim was to eliminate the use of bending through his own means.
Bolin's parents were killed when he was six, and he was left in the care of his older brother, Mako. They lived on the streets, surviving through any means necessary, whether through scamming old ladies out of their bread or through doing various menial jobs for the Triple Threats, one of the triads that run the streets of Republic City. Mako protected Bolin as best he can, leaving the boy oddly sheltered for a homeless orphan. It is through a lucky turn of events that Bolin and Mako were picked up by a probender by the name of Toza, which allowed them not only a place to live (in an apartment above the probending arena), but have a way to live a honest life: through being professional athletes, making a name for themselves as the "Fire Ferrets."
Before a match, Bolin meets Korra, the current Avatar, by chance, inviting her to the Fire Ferret locker room so she can watch a probending match. After their waterbender quits the team, Korra takes his place, becoming the missing piece of their team which allowed them to make it to the finals of the probending tournament...
Which they lose, but that was probably for the best, as immediately after the end of the tournament the arena is attacked by Equalists, nonbenders lead by Amon to combat the "inequality" between benders and nonbenders. Eventually, Bolin and Mako, along with Asami, Mako's girlfriend and the daughter of their team sponsor who is eventually revealed to be an Equalist, move to Air Temple Island and form their own group with Korra to combat Amon and his Equalists.
After the defeat of Amon, things settle down for a few months. Asami struggles to rebuild the company started by her father; Korra works to master airbending; Mako quits probending, becomes a police officer (and says awful puns) and begins to date Korra; Bolin struggles as the new captain of the Fire Ferrets and leads the team to a record losing season.
Visiting the South Pole for a festival with Korra, they become aware of a new problem arrising: the spirits are becoming dark and twisted, attacking people in the human world. While there, Bolin manages to move up in waterbending society: he gains the good favor of Varrick, a business tycoon from the Southern Water Tribe and gains the romantic attention of Eska, Korra's... odd cousin from the Northern Water Tribe, which soon becomes a little too much for Bolin to handle, which leads him to flee the South Pole immediately after Eska forces an engagement on him. Oh, and the civil war happening between the Northern and Southern Water Tribes was also a reason why they fled.
Back in Republic City, Varrick notices Bolin's ability to speak to crowds and recruits him for his latest venture: "movers", which is the Avatarverse version of movies. Varrick casts Bolin as Nuktuk, a waterbender from the South Pole, for a series of propaganda films to rally support from the people of Republic City for the Southern Water Tribe. Unbeknownst to Bolin, Varrick is also going through some... not so legal methods to get support for the South. It all comes to light during the premiere for the final Nuktuck "mover," in which Bolin foils an actual attempt to kidnap the president of the United Republic of Nations.
Meanwhile, Korra is dealing with the true threat of the season: her uncle, Unaloq, who plans to release the spirit of darkness, Vaatu, during the time of Harmonic Convergence, a time that occurs every 10,000 years in which the planets align and spiritual energy is amplified. It is during this time that Raava, the spirit of light, and the Avatar must battle against Vaatu, the winner of the battle determining the fate of the world for the next 10,000 years.
Hurrying back to the South Pole, at first, Raava and Korra seem to have not only lost the battle against Vaatu when he merged with Unaloq, but severed the connection between them, thus ending the Avatar cycle. However, Raava creates a new bond with Korra, which allows them defeat them both. Towards the end of Harmonic Convergence, Korra decides that it would be better if the human and spirit worlds were connected once more and chooses to keep them united rather than separate, allowing humans and spirits to freely travel between the two worlds at will. This creates an environment that had not been seen for 10,000 years, one that humans and spirits would need to relearn how to live in and creating a task that Korra will need to learn how to keep safe, creating new experiences for the Avatars that come after her.

Self-confident to a fault, Bolin is someone that can be very open about his feelings. All in all, Bolin is a teenage boy who is constantly growing, in more than one way.
As for how he would react to being in Tu Vishan, well, Bolin will be a bit reserved! Following the events of Book 2, he is on the path to doing some growing, and as such, he will be hesitant to being drawn into another war when he just finished sort of taking part in one. Due to the union of the human and spirit worlds, Bolin would be a bit more open to the idea of being in a world that lies in between realms. Also given his penchant for being taken somewhere against his will, he'll be angry and annoyed at this happening to him once more, however there will be a sense of wonder at him living in a city on a turtle, as he's still a child at heart.

Inventory: Bolin would not have anything on him asides from his clothes and perhaps some snacks in his pocket for his pet fire ferret, Pabu.
Suite: I would like to place Bolin in the Earth Sector because he feels most comfortable around earth when it comes down to it. He'll find some sort of common ground with the people there, given his honest and dedicated nature. As for the number of floors, one should be alright! He is capable of living with what he's got.
In-Character Samples:
Third Person:
There was really no getting around it: Bolin missed his brother. He knew that, he knew that the first moment he moved out of their shared apartment. As much as he wanted the independence, getting away from his brother's judgmental looks and questions, it was odd, getting home and knowing that he didn't have anyone waiting for him there or he didn't have to wait for someone to get home. It was just him and Pabu.
It got worse when Mako was arrested. Going from putting crooks behind bars to being behind those bars. Nothing about it really made sense. Why would Mako do something like that, he had no reason to steal from Asami. He knows that his brother is innocent, but Bolin can't buy that it was Varrick that was responsible for that, responsible for everything. Bolin wants to take his brother by the shoulders and talk to him, "Look at everything that Varrick's done for me! How can this guy be a bad guy?" It just doesn't make any sense.
So here he is, on what is perhaps the biggest night of his life, or maybe one of the top five greatest nights in his life, and the person he wants to share this with isn't there. Mako isn't there and Bolin can't handle that. He should feeling like he's walking amongst the thousands of stars that are in the night sky, but he keeps finding himself thinking back to Mako in his jail cell.
No, no, no. This isn't right. It shouldn't be like this. Mako should be here. Mako should be here, ribbing him about this movie but still congratulating him on a job well done. And Korra, she should be here too, complaining about his waterbending and the totally inaccurate sets and costumes, which makes no sense really since Varrick is also from the Southern Water Tribe. He's glad that Asami is here. Bolin loves Asami, he really does, but... it's just not the same with only her. It should be all four of them together and Bolin knows this.
He can't take this. He needs some air. He needs some air stat. Quietly, Bolin gets up from his seat and leaves his box. He heads outside towards a balcony, where he can see Air Temple Island in the distance.
How did it turn out like this?
Network:
[ You see an eye, looking intently at the screen before it moves away and reveals that the eye is indeed part of a face, which is now looking a bit sheepish as if he just realized what sight people were greeted with before he moved a bit further away. ]
Man, I never would have thought that cameras could be this small... [ The face turns into an easy smile, one that shows that he's a bit nervous, but still relatively at ease ]
Granted, I never thought that something like this would exist. But hey, I've seen weirder things. Name's Bolin, and I'm new here. So if anybody had any advice or anything like that, I'd love to hear it.
... Really, I would.

Honest with himself and others, Bolin is very secure in himself.
At his core, Bolin is someone who is friendly and outgoing who cares deeply about those important to him. While at times he may be immature, that does not mean that he is not capable of maturity. Self-confident to a fault, Bolin is someone that can be very open about his feelings.
Appearance:

Abilities:
Bolin is an earthbender, which gives him the power of geokinesis. As he is a probender, his style of earthbending varies greatly from that of traditional earthbending, which requires one to have a strong stance and remain rooted to the ground.
In addition, Bolin is very athletic as well, and is shown to have some knowledge of wrestling. His stamina is pretty top notch, as he capable of being able to bend with one arm after taking a mean hit to the other one.
Also, he's got some acting talent, as he has become well known for playing the role of Nuktuck.
