Okay so it does go without saying that Mako is Bolin's most important person and will remain his most important person until Bolin is married and has kids. Even then, Mako will still be pretty high up on the list because he's Mako! Bolin's only brother and the person who raised him. So the very fact that Bolin hurt Mako this badly upsets him a lot and he has no idea what to do about it.
He didn't mean to blame Mako. he just honestly thought that Mako wasn't understanding why he thinks the way he does about what people think about them. But to be honest, he doesn't understand it either, since pretty much the majority of his insecurity comes from how he perceives them. It comes from Mako holding things back and from Mako trying to take care of them solo. Which got better when Mako shared things that made Bolin cry, but they were still there! Bolin was just better at talking himself out of it.
But then THINGS happened. Bolin is pretty easy to goad into doing things. Basically all it takes is mentioning Mako and Bolin would do something. So yeah, things happened...
Fast forward to tears thread. Bolin did want to apologize, but then things went awry. So Bolin has no idea of what to do. He's mad. He's mad at himself for fucking over his relationship with his brother. Bolin wants to beat himself up, but that won't help anything. Bolin wants to fix things with Mako, but he doesn't know where to start and he's pretty sure that Mako doesn't want anything to do with him at the moment. So he's just going to let out his frustration by smashing rocks.
